Film Name: 落凡尘 / Fall Into The Mortal World / Into The Mortal World

I’ve been hearing a lot of people recommending the new film Fall Into The Mortal World for a while now, and as a lover of animated films, I definitely didn’t want to miss it!

Yesterday I finally got my wish and felt it was worth it: the recognition and appreciation for the film in recent days has not been overstated, and it’s definitely a gem of an animation that deserves to be recommended.

Not to mention, the film’s unique design and aesthetics are enough for me to give it a good review.

To be honest, in recent years, domestic mythological animation works is not easy to do, especially the basic settings and aesthetic system, a lot of good-looking, but really eye-catching but not much, in addition to those who are trying to glean the “Journey to the West” and “Feudal” IP, the rest are very similar. Apart from the ones that try to pull the “Journey to the West” and “Feudal God” IPs, the rest of them are pretty much the same.

The idea of Fall Into The Mortal World is the most golden merit in my opinion.

Originating from a Bijou short film five years ago, this film is an expanded story based on it, and in addition to the core twenty-eight star constellations, the film also incorporates the traditional Chinese cultural/labour elements of embroidery, silk thread, and knitting.

This is what wowed me the most, the way the film lays down the picture of the divine realm with cloth and weaving, and the fact that entire scenes revolve around these thematic elements is truly breathtaking.

The weapons used by the protagonist Jin Feng, the golden needle and the golden thread, also have both functions and meanings of destruction (stabbing, strangling) and repair (sewing, mending), symbolising the two sides of the coin of destruction and creation.

In addition, the earthly flavour of the Seven Ancient Towns is also very grounded, with life-like scenes such as eating hot pots and drinking milk tea looking very intimate.

Although the character modelling in Fall Into The Mortal World is still a little sketchy, they have put the emphasis on the blade, and the action, scenes and special effects are all very impressive, giving the film a first-class (and cost-effective) visual presentation of the “new Chinese aesthetics”.

As for the film’s story and characters, I’m also quite satisfied – not that the narrative is as solid and exciting as it is, or that the characterisation and relationships are as vivid and excellent as they could be.

In fact, Fall Into The Mortal World doesn’t do that piece of the film very well, with a rather obvious disconnect in the story, a less-than-smooth connection and pacing between the back and forth episodes, and not much in the way of great characterisation and relationships between characters ……

However, this part of the film is very “clean”.

Although the main story is taken off from the legend of the Cowherd and the Weaving Maiden, it doesn’t stick to the corresponding thematic genre, but focuses on their two children, Jin Feng and Yu Lu (Xiao Fan).

The simplicity and purity of the adventure, the sincerity and warmth of the affection, and the frank and touching sacrifices will make the audience feel comfortable watching it.

Even though the film as a whole is still a bit raw and stiff, in my opinion it is flawless and it is certainly a good film to recommend.
