Film Name: 一个和四个 / One and Four
This weekend saw a number of new movies on the “small” side, and I started with the suspenseful drama One and Four – which, not to mention its friendly 88-minute runtime, won me over in advance.
After watching the movie, I thought back to the flick a bit more and found it to be quite an afterthought, short, concise and just right.
When I learned that this is the first feature film of the young director Jumei Chenglei, born in 1997, my evaluation of the film was even higher by 10%, even though Jumei Chenglei’s father is the famous Tibetan director Wanma Tsetan (who is also the producer of the film), and there is this layer of “family background”, but the first debut feature film can be so well done, it is worth recognizing and praising anyway. In any case, it deserves to be recognized, praised and recommended.
The story of One and Four is very simple: the forest ranger Sang Jie’s hut breaks into a big man with a gun, who claims to be a forest public security officer who comes to catch poachers, and after Sang Jie gets along with him for a while, he captures Genbao, a villager from the same village, who is suspected by the big man of being a poaching connector, and then soon afterward, there appears in front of Sang Jie another small man with a gun who claims to be a forest public security officer, so at the end of the movie, there is a climax of the four men confronting each other in the hut. Forest Public Security, so at the end of the movie, there are four people in the hut confront each other climax ……
Whether it’s an entry-level werewolf killing, or an asymmetrical “Rashomon”, “One and Four” such a suspenseful movie is not rare, and the plot of the film is not difficult to understand, after watching the film can be understood, so I will no longer be spoilers to write any review and analysis.
Of course, I would suggest that friends who have seen this film, you can think back to think back to the interaction between several characters in the film, many ambiguous details in the know the answer to see will be more interesting, especially accounted for more than half of the film’s ranger and the big man of the two plays, the big man is also positive and evil words and deeds, Sang Jie suspicious of small actions, are very chewy, and the big man and the Genbao of the section of the scene, in the clear the two true identity and then think about it is also very interesting. Another thing I really appreciate about One and Four – and it’s also an important plus point of the movie – is the setting: it puts the story in the middle of the Tibetan snowy and icy land, in the middle of an empty and deserted forest, in the middle of a wilderness where everything lives, a big place, but the only safe place for miles around is the ranger’s hut. It is a big place, but when the snowstorm comes, the only safe place within a few dozen miles is the forest ranger’s hut, therefore, it is a huge secret room.
In the unique “Chinese Western” scene, with Tibetan local characteristics, with a little bit of this type of film common “small spices”, such as the daily record of the forest ranger logbook, does not read the wall clock, will always be handed to Sang Jie hand of the pistol, survived the antlerless deer, and so on, the film texture a moment, and so on, the film is not only the same, but it is the only safe place in the dozens of miles, so this is a huge chamber. To sum up, I would recommend the quality of One and Four, especially after the death of Manma Tsetan half a year ago, and I hope that Kumi Sung-rye, who had a good start, will come up with even more brilliant works in the future.
