A Quiet Place 2″, which was parachuted to the end of May just before its release, is a rare foreign horror thriller on the domestic big screen – due to cultural differences, aesthetic standards, review conditions and other objective factors, this kind of film has always belonged to a certain audience base, but it can not be a big fire of the type of film.
“Silent Place” series with its ‘broken circle type’ of actual performance, to give everyone a good lesson.
I went back to the article I wrote for A Quiet Place 3 years ago, and after thinking about it a little bit, I realized that although the sequel to A Quiet Place 2 has expanded and innovated to a great extent, it still carries over the same key, core strengths and weaknesses as the first film: the same great atmosphere and experience, and the same buggy, poorly written movie.
If you liked/hated A Quiet Place, chances are you’ll like/hate the sequel as well. …… If you’re just looking at the hour-and-a-half “experience” of watching the movie, A Quiet Place 2 isn’t bad at all.
[Friendly reminder: there will be spoilers below].
The success of the first A Quiet Place was largely due to the fact that it was a fairly pure B-movie in the horror/thriller genre, but accordingly, the thin and rudimentary sci-fi setting became a shortcoming in terms of logic and plausibility.
A Quiet Place 2 has learned many of the lessons of the previous installment and has been greatly enriched throughout its content, scenes and story line.
For example, the movie opens with a lot of ink devoted to the origin of the story (the sudden attack of the alien monsters), not only explaining/reviewing the character relationships of the protagonist Abbott’s family to make it easier for new and old viewers to refresh their memory, but also contributing to a hilarious, panicked chase scene using Day 1’s experience of the humans’ sudden attack in ignorance of what’s going on.
The sequel also makes drastic changes in the basic theme: the first movie is simply put in one sentence “the Abbott family’s lonely survival in the post-apocalyptic world”, which is relatively small in both physical and narrative space; in the second movie after Lee Abbott’s sacrifice, Evelyn Abbott takes the children out of their home and embarks on an unknown survival journey, with crises and challenges. survival journey, with a new escalation of crisis and challenge.
Such a full range of updates, for the improvement of the film “software” effect does play an immediate effect, regardless of whether they have seen the first, at least most of the audience for the story of “A Quiet Place 2” will no longer have a “no end” of the odd feeling, and the common post-apocalyptic survival sequences are also closer to the audience distance. A Quiet Place 2 is no longer a quirky story with no beginning and no end, and the common post-apocalyptic survival sequences in the movie are more likely to bring the audience closer.
Of course, the movie retains its core selling point, which is an audiovisual experience that challenges people’s physiology and common sense.
In an environment where any loud sound/movement will attract monsters, the survivors must maintain relatively primitive habits in a “post-modern” environment, and various behaviors and practices are often anti-human: for example, after Marcus is caught in a trap and his leg is caught in the trap, Evelyn has to cover her eldest son’s mouth to prevent him from screaming and attracting more monsters, and this is the first time that the film has been seen in a post-modern environment. For example, after Marcus is caught in the leg with a trap, Evelyn has to cover her eldest son’s mouth to prevent him from screaming more and attracting more monsters, which is similar to the upper part of the story where Evelyn is stabbed through the soles of her feet with a spike but has to endure the pain and hold her voice.
The exclusive techniques of A Quiet Place 2 are also played with more sophistication in some iconic and specific moments. The combination of the ordinary people’s perspective, the deaf girl Regan’s perspective, and the third party’s perspective from outside the scene, and the sequential progression of different perspectives not only ensures an immersive and immersive atmosphere, but also greatly enriches the audience’s viewing experience.
So, just like the first A Quiet Place, I also strongly recommend that viewers go to the theater to see this sequel, to experience the “sense of scene” is the main meaning of the film – the scene I saw, in the beginning of the noisy, a lot of noise, but the plot deepens and the atmosphere is rendered in the right place. As the plot deepens and the atmosphere is rendered in place, everyone naturally quiets down, and the corresponding “shock and awe” effect also comes.
It’s also worth noting that A Quiet Place 2 takes the usual post-apocalyptic “man vs. man” theme and puts it into A Quiet Place 2, and it’s a good one. It’s not so much that Emmett’s transformation from “people out there aren’t worth saving” to a willingness to go through fire with Regan is so good, but rather the fact that the dockside is a place where you’re not supposed to be, but rather that you’re not supposed to be. It’s not that Emmett’s transition from “the people out there aren’t worth saving” to being willing to go through fire with Regan is so great, but rather that the dock gang’s methods of victimization are similar to Emmett’s traps from earlier, which are designed to attract monsters by making noise, increasing the “flair” of the crisis.
With the aforementioned strengths out of the way, the rest of A Quiet Place 2 is basically a slog, and to be honest, with the expansion of the premise inherited from both the strengths and weaknesses, this partially distracting sequel is not as good as the first one in terms of overall quality and watchability.
Questions about some of the details and background are left unmentioned, and the motivations of the main characters are oftentimes lacking. The problem is that the film’s plot is still driven by the characters’ lack of motivation and even logic in their death-defying behavior – such as the dual narratives in the second half of the film, which are formed from one outrageous starting point after another.
Regan is in a hurry, alone on the road to find the radio signal source, in order to carry on his father’s legacy to fight back against the monsters; Emmott did not want to go to find her at first, and then accompanied her on the road, just because of Regan’s sentence of the mouth; Evelyn does not leave any reason and instructions, leaving a small son and two sons to go out to find the oxygen tanks; Marcus, for no reason, a person to go out to attract the monsters, I am afraid that can only be interpreted as “For the sake of the plot, it is necessary to start the group immediately” ……
It’s also unfortunate that A Quiet Place 2 uses sound waves too often to kill monsters when they find their weaknesses, so that almost every monster that shows up ends up dead, with the rate of death and appearance skyrocketing, and the film’s corresponding sense of tension and menace being undermined.
Of course, all in all, A Quiet Place 2 inherits the first film’s strengths and weaknesses, and is worth a trip to the theater, but there’s not much further to unpack, so it’s up to you to decide whether or not you want to go for it.
