Film Name: 熊出没·重启未来 / Boonie Bears: Future Reborn
As the increasingly recognized “wall of Chinese New Year masterpieces”, the “Boonie Bears” series is one of the most stable IPs out there, but I was surprised that this year’s “Boonie Bears: Future Reborn” (hereafter referred to as “Future Reborn”) seems to be a bit of a dud.
I took my kids to see it yesterday, and in all fairness, it’s a very well done movie, with many upgrades and improvements on a number of levels, especially in the production, and I personally feel it’s better than last year’s “Boonie Bears: Time Twist”.
At the same time, I also saw a number of quiet but far-reaching changes in “Future Reborn” that, if done right, could have made the Bear movie even broader and longer lasting than its own IP.
Unfortunately, there are so many changes and evolution, but did not bring more waves, in the final analysis, or because it dares not completely out of the “sub-provision to the” animation comfort zone, and those fine-tuning of the film, compared to the next door to the magic child to set off the shocking waves, but also really not enough to see.
[Friendly reminder: there will be spoilers below].
Let’s talk about the strengths of Future Reborn. One of the best things about this movie is that it really goes to great lengths to create a colorful, dangerous, and not-too-dark future world.
The main stage of the movie is set 100 years in the future, where spore plants have taken over the land and mankind is struggling to survive in an apocalyptic world.
The spore plants in the movie are rich in types and characteristics, and most of them are aggressive to humans. Needle spores, psychedelic spores, ice spores, soft spores, destructive spores and many other spores contribute to a lot of dangers and laughs, and the scene in which the future travelers Baldurong, Xiong Da and Xiong Er and the teenage boy Xiaoliang travel through the forest of spores has become the most hilarious adventure of the whole movie.
In the movie suspended in the sky Watchtower City, also spent a lot of effort to design, anti-gravity devices, electromagnetic cannons, mechanical prosthetics, slums and other settings, obviously absorbed a lot of cyberpunk elements.
In terms of “sci-fi” alone, I think “Future Reborn” is by far the best of the bear movies, worthy of the series’ status as “the final chapter of sci-fi”.
On the other hand, more effort and expense was put into the camera work than in the past, most notably in the chase scene where the main characters and their team run away from the predators.
The long first-person perspective and multi-angle, multi-camera close-ups of the protagonists, action, explosions, and thrills in that scene make it an eye-opener even in other blockbusters, and even more so in a bear movie.
In addition, “Future Reborn” also continued the previous series of movies like “fetishism” features, you can still see many well-known classics in the shadow.
For example, the painting style of the spores attaching to various objects all over the place is very similar to the shadow of “The Last of Us Season”; the scene of the villainous city lord jumping from the crashed plane in his mecha is clearly a replica of Colonel Miles’ duel in “Avatar”; and in the climax of the spore swarm’s attack on the city of First Look, the part of the swarm adjusting the cannons, assisting Ryo and Lightning also obviously pays homage to the two films “The Wandering Earth” and “The Wandering Earth”. The Wandering Earth”.
It’s worth noting that “Future Reborn” also begins to downplay the traditional protagonist model of the Bears’ movies in an attempt to create a more diverse and expansive creative space.
As I recall, the last few Bear movies have had a “relative protagonist” on top of the group, often rotating between Bear (“Boonie Bears: Guardian Code”, etc.), Bear (“Boonie Bears: Back to Earth”, etc.), and Baldhead (” Boonie Bears: Time Twist”, etc.).
But “Future Reborn” doesn’t have such a character, if you want to say, it can be regarded as a dual protagonist mode of Little Liang and Baldie, or even Little Liang as the leader – if this practice becomes the norm in the future, then the type of adventure maps that can be selected for a bear movie will be much richer! ……
At the same time, Xiaoliang’s full name is “Guangliang”, and his real identity is the great-grandson of Bald Qiang (that’s right, Bald Qiang has become a great-grandfather), which opens up more possibilities for the expansion of the Bears’ IP.
Coupled with the correct and stable environmental protection theme, anti-authority, the people’s heart of the formula, “Future Reborn” actually sells very well.
However, the film’s current box office performance is not impressive, and although there is still a lot of room for improvement in the later stages, it is unlikely to repeat the box office miracle of last year’s “Boonie Bears: Time Twist”, which had a 10th anniversary and made nearly 2 billion dollars.
This is not difficult to understand, after all, “Future Reborn” is a year out of a mass-produced series of films, its foothold has always stood in the “for the children to see” above, there are still a lot of children can only be laughed out of the unusual bridge, and its market performance depends on the same period of time, the theater environment! ……
This year, my child’s enthusiasm for watching the Bears’ movie is relatively ordinary, but urged me to buy the tickets for the second brush of “Ne Zha 2”, and already in the planning of the third brush – a glimpse of the panther can be seen, this year’s “Future Reborn” is a little bit of a bad time, which bumped into dumplings five years to grind the sword of the great masterpiece.
We can’t say that Bears is any worse, but it’s just that it’s a bit dwarfed by the “truly all-ages” Nezha, who’s so passionate and hilarious.
