Jurassic World: Dominion 2022 Film Review: “Theme park movie” paradigm

Film Name: 侏罗纪世界3 / Jurassic World: Dominion / Jurassic Park 6

The domestic theaters, which have been so cold for so long, are about to get a Hollywood blockbuster to save the day: “Jurassic World: Dominion”.

I was lucky enough to have an early look at the film last week, and there were no surprises or disappointments, but to summarize, it’s a pretty standard, typical theme park movie.

Note that this definitional term is not meant to be particularly positive or negative. On the one hand, Jurassic World: Dominion almost abandons its narrative efforts and thematic ambitions, while on the other hand, the film is full of the sentimentality of the franchise, with great action sequences and a lot of entertainment.

I don’t want to hold my nose and say how good this movie is, but I also don’t want to flippantly dismiss it as a “bad movie,” as the world has become too diverse in its standards. …… Therefore, it’s up to you to decide how good the movie is.

[Friendly reminder: there will be spoilers below].

First of all, let’s be clear: if you’re looking for a complete and coherent story, look no further than Jurassic World: Dominion, which has a plot that’s pretty much at the bottom of the Jurassic movie series.

The story takes place four years after the destruction of the island of Nabulaar, when dinosaurs were already living with humans all over the world, in the wild, in towns and cities, on the black market, in laboratories, and so on.

It would be logical for the movie to explore the theme of whether or not humans and dinosaurs can coexist in harmony, balancing the state of existence, looking to the future of their relationship, and so on – topics that never go out of style.

However, Jurassic World: Dominion doesn’t have any of that in mind, and the “humans and dinosaurs coexisting” line is just an opening backdrop as the plot quickly moves on to the protagonist and his team’s dinosaur-themed adventures around the globe.

Although this trade-off avoids the controversy and criticism of the second installment’s overly “sanctimonious” behavior, it also eliminates the possibility of seeking a breakthrough in the upper limit of the genre, and loses all ambition for discernment.

As for the process of plot advancement (adventure progress reading), Jurassic World: Dominion is also in a state of “swinging for the fences” at all times, embellishing a few sentences when it feels like it, and then directly stalling and switching to the next scene when it’s hard to explain.

For example, the new role of the female pilot, has served as a stowaway, intelligence officers, assistants and other different identities, appearances are only out of plot needs, the image of thin to almost no, even if it is a tool for people, can not catch her so gripping ah ……

Such a film still dare to confidently release, I think it is still because it has two major magic weapons: sentiment and scene.

Jurassic World: Dominion’s biggest ace in the hole is the fact that it brings together the iconic trio of stars from Jurassic Park; Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum.

Getting to see Drs. Allen, Ellie, and McClane perform together again is an absolute blast for those who loved the old trilogy of movies, and no matter what they’re doing, it’s exciting just to have them there – like the scene where Dr. Allen is exploring the mine cave in the darkness with his hat on and holding a torch, and people are styling themselves in a way that makes my The feeling came ……

In addition to the return of all the old main actors, the movie is also full of homage elements in many scenes.

When all the main characters converge in the wilderness, there is a very classic scene: the overturned SUV, the Tyrannosaurus Rex searching for prey, the humans hiding around the car, which can’t be said to be an exact replica of Jurassic Park’s famous scene, but can be said to be a godlike one.

On top of the aforementioned sentiments, Jurassic World: Dominion also focuses quite a bit on the legacy and sense of continuity of the entire movie series.

One of the most iconic sequences has to be the freeze-frame when Owen and the others go in search of Beta, the baby Velociraptor.

Alan, Owen, Maisie three people work together to subdue the Beta, the old, in the frame of the three generations of young people to join forces, regardless of the rationale behind or look how wacky, at least the metaphorical full of pose is very decent.

But then again, the audience that can eat this wave of sentiment is always a minority, after all, “Jurassic” series of films spanning nearly 30 years, in these years, the commercial film sequence of frequent pop-ups is not the hottest top stream, put into the young people’s group fan base is even weaker … … …

So, the core of Jurassic World: Dominion’s credentials are still its big, over-the-top action sequences.

I don’t know what people think of “locusts bigger than a man’s head” (people who are afraid of bugs and have an intense phobia won’t like it) …… Anyway, I personally think it’s a great idea.

The locusts, modified by a biosynthetic company and exiled into the wild, quickly cause a lot of destruction, and since they’re infused with dinosaur genes, we can think of them as the evils of Pandora’s Box being opened; the swarm of locusts are hideous, sky-scraping, big and scary, and trigger several key plot points, which is brilliant in every way except that they don’t look like dinosaurs.

As for the main dinosaur-related action sequences, the movie doesn’t disappoint.

Jurassic World: Dominion completely opens up its mindset this time around, as the stage is no longer confined to islands, parks, mansions, and other areas relatively far removed from human society, but fully integrated into the crowd.

My favorite part of the film is the middle section in Malta, where dinosaurs can be seen everywhere, from the underground black market to the sunny streets of the city, and even better, Owen and the others have a life-and-death fight with the “biological weapon” Velociraptor, as well as a dangerous street chase, which creates a chemistry unlike anything seen in the series since it was first released. This part of the movie generates a chemistry not seen in the series since its inception.

Unfortunately, the camera then pans to BioSynthetics’ nature preserve – and it’s back to familiar surroundings.

As the second half of the movie begins, the rhythm of the “human-dragon adventure” becomes more pronounced.

Pteranodon attacked the plane in the air, causing no casualties in the crash; Owen two people crashed the plane, but also in the ice up and down to deal with the swimming Dilophosaurus; parachute Claire, in the trees to avoid the attack of the Scytosaurus, and in the underwater to escape the Southern Beastosaurus of the manhunt; Allen and others in the mine, experienced a thrilling “dinosaur haunted house In the mine, Alan and the others experience a thrilling “dinosaur haunted house” adventure; and finally, before escaping from the park, the killing battle between the T. rex, the Southern T. rex and the Scythesaurus also brings out some novelty. ……

Discover it, right? This series of thrilling action scenes one after another, audio and visual quality is outstanding, CG concentration is very high, the viewing experience is really much the same as touring the Jurassic theme park, the plot, characters and so on are weak to negligible, the key is to let the audience more or less feel the excitement of the dinosaurs coming to the surface.

It is said that many of Disney’s commercial films are “theme park-style entertainment”, people “Jurassic World: Dominion” further, simply do not act, directly according to the mode of theme park film.

The “blockbuster” movie, which frankly forgoes the written word and focuses only on precision-fed action sequences, is becoming more and more popular in Hollywood these days, and I expressed similar disappointment last year when reviewing Godzilla vs Kong …….

But with Jurassic World: Dominion, I don’t want to jump to that conclusion anymore, because there are a lot of people out there who just want to be entertained and are happy to accept this kind of movie, and the movie market is in the toilet, so what else is there to do?

So, let’s look at it from an open point of view, the pursuit of the movie fans, please lightly spray light step, want to brainless cool audience also less to see others nagging, no matter what the quality of the film, will eventually have a place belongs to it.
