Moments We Shared 2024 Film Review: It is not pretty, but it’s not much to criticise

Film Name: 电影版云边有个小卖部 / Moments We Shared

Although I finished watching the new film ‘There’s a Kiosk by the Clouds’ last night, I didn’t make the slightest effort to say anything about it until now. …… There’s no particular reason for that, it’s just that it’s a bit hard to review.

It would be easier if it was just a bad film, but the problem is that there are still some good things about it.

For the record, I have no knowledge of the original film, no love or hate for the writer or the actors, and I rarely even watch this kind of film – so I’m reviewing it from the perspective of an ordinary, unfamiliar viewer.

First of all, what I recognise most about Moments We Shared is that it captures the confusion and fatigue of young people in the big city, their subconscious desire to return to their hometowns, and their enthusiasm to work hard and live a positive life despite their sense of being out of this world and lying down in a calm state of mind.

Apart from that, the place, Yunbian Town, is also designed to be incredibly typical: it is mountainous and beautiful, very beautiful, not too far away from the city it seems, and even less of a poor hometown, but it has the characteristics of countless small towns in China, with its close-knit humane society, the old classmates who didn’t go far away, the landlord who made a fortune, the fool that everyone knows well, the loser younger brother and the sister who dotes on her younger brother… …

But that’s pretty much all the film has going for it, and as mentioned above, for all its sniffy lingering and universal setting, it’s just a little too fake to film, like shots pulled out with a full-grade beauty filter, and even as a film, I found it embellished to the point of being slightly uncomfortable.

While it is understandable that Cheng Frost, as a rich young lady who comes to Yunbian Town to enjoy life, has nothing to do all day long, it is a bit too dreamy for the naïve, simple, stubborn and kind Liu Thirteen to live such a ‘refreshing and sweet’ life.

What’s more, the characters and story lines in Moments We Shared are too fragmented and out of tune. It would be fine if it could be made into a ‘lifestyle’ film that lacks a main line and focuses on experience, but the problem is that it doesn’t. It still has narrative attempts and emotional themes – which would kill it. -That’s going to kill me.

A moment is the love of the two little innocent, a moment is the blood is thicker than water affection, a moment and half of the friendship, coupled with a bunch of abrupt and hard town life …… This film obviously lacks the ability to so many characters and stories together, but still did so, the result can only be a disaster on the plot.

In fact, the film still has many opportunities to go up a level, such as the character line of Grandma Wang Yingying, even if handled so hastily and deliberately, I was still indisputably made to cry, so it can be seen that the sensationalism is still effective …… Just this effective, in the stripping away of the affectionate setting of its own touching and the teacher of the performance of the Alicia, and how much can be left? How much of it is left?

But at this point, I’m not going to be too hard on the film for being so bad. After all, Moments We Shared has been one of the best box office and impact films of the new releases this weekend, and moviegoing is a very personal thing, and the fact that it’s doing what it’s doing so far is something.

Besides, it’s not a bad film in terms of intent and execution, it just didn’t get made.
