Film Name: 小倩 / Nie Xiaoqian
Last night I went to see the Chinese animated movie “Nie Xiaoqian” which was released in the theaters in a different gear, and my feelings were quite complicated during and after watching it. ……
In the first part of the movie, I felt that it was quite bad, but in the second part, it pulled back quite a bit, but in general, it was still a bit far from being a good movie, and in the end, I could only rate it as a passing grade or so, “not bad”.
“Nie Xiaoqian’s strengths and weaknesses in production and storytelling are somewhat similar, both of which are high and low, uneven, and unable to give viewers (or at least me) a more unified impression.
Let’s start with the visual aspect of the movie.
The film’s character modeling can not be said to be more pleasant, the main characters are inclined to big eyes, cone face of the current 3D animation is very common that type of modeling, as for many supporting characters and monsters is even more simple, the feeling of light animation is always using so many sets of similar templates, the scene design is also, really very random.
If the whole movie is like this, it means that the production cost is limited, but the problem is that “Nie Xiaoqian” part of the camera and obviously enough money, some of the vistas painted very beautiful, individual close-ups are also very high grade, but also inserted a detailed and good-looking 2D animation, if the whole can be like this, it would be good ……
Unfortunately, “Nie Xiaoqian’s” graphic performance can’t always be maintained in a good state, so I felt that the movie was a little bit scribbly and a little bit stunning, which was not very comfortable.
In contrast, the movie’s plot is much more fractured, and that’s the key factor that makes it not a good movie.
Conclusion: The story of “Nie Xiaoqian” is certainly a good one, and the design idea and emotional expression are not a problem, but in the concrete implementation of the problem of “head light and foot heavy”, too obsessed with the later reversal and the content of the plot, resulting in most of the time the narrative seems to be messy, bloated, so that the watchability of the discount.
(-Spoiler warning-)
The movie is a radical adaptation of the original Liaozhai “Nie Xiaoqian”, which tells a rather sadistic love story, and the bond between Xiaoqian and Ning Sheng involves two lifetimes each, so it can be viewed as a prequel to “A Chinese Ghost Story”, or as a new story (looking at the setting, it also looks a bit like Chasing Light Animation’s “White Snake” series).
Looking at the plot as a whole, “Nie Xiaoqian” is still very good, there are no gaps or big holes, and the reversals in the later part of the movie are not bad at all, first making the audience feel that it’s a new love story, then a scum routine, and then bringing out the truth of the past life, and finally completing the mutual redemption of Ning Sheng and Xiaoqian.
I admit, these reversals do greatly redeem the viewer, but the problem is, the whole film plot points, are around the reversal to start, the middle of the first part of the various padding is not put at all, speed through the Lanruo Temple, with the ashes on the road, return to the sun trip, etc., just any one of them can say quite a lot of such a large plot capacity, a less than two hours of the film is certainly not stuffed (made into a drama will be even better), and the result is naturally the rhythm of the The result is naturally poor pacing.
I hope that Light Animation can make a better animated movie when it is not partnered with Colorful Stripes House.
