Phone case companies have started to figure out what’s going on with the upcoming foldable phones. Spigen was one of the first to design a design product, and it plans to share three product models for the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
These boxes have similar designs, with the front cover protecting the top and bottom bezels of the 4.6-inch external display, and the back with a cutout for the three-camera system. There will be three models-Tough Armor, Ultra Hybrid and Thin Fit-with varying degrees of protection, from thick plastic cases to translucent packaging. All boxes cost around $ 20 and are made mainly of plastic and silicone materials such as PC, TPU and PU.

Although the case looks familiar, the key here is the hinge, which phone case manufacturers haven’t considered in the past. It seems that every company that designs a foldable phone uses a different hinge method-Huawei’s Mate X folds outwards, and Motorola seems to be working on a way to flip it-while Samsung has adopted a book-like shape, using the inside of the hinge Interlocking gears can be folded and closed. We don’t yet know exactly how the case makers designed the mechanism around the hinge, but Spigen’s model shows for the first time how they deal with it. In these cases, it seems to just entangle outside.
The story of protecting the display of mobile phones is unclear. It is likely that many existing types of screen protectors do not work properly, and Samsung has not stated whether Fold will pre-install a pre-installed screen protector like the Galaxy S10. But Samsung told us that the display has been “tested and guaranteed 200,000 times”, which is estimated to be five years of heavy use. Samsung also said that its screen is “designed to withstand drops, scratches, and of course bend, so it won’t cause damage.”

Another phone accessory company, Zagg, told us that it had started developing a foldable phone case, but was blocked because it had no actual phone at hand. Given the challenge of creating a new, foldable phone case, Zagg said it is waiting to receive these devices before commenting on any potential feature limitations it may encounter.
Spigen takes a different approach. The company says that models are often used when making phone cases, and because Samsung detailed the precise measurements of the Galaxy Fold, it was able to put the models together and start building cases.
Work started before the phone was fully unveiled. The Spigen developer said that the company has created about 20 different prototypes to prepare for various options and possibilities: “We must collect all rumors and find as many sources as possible to analyze the new structure of the phone”.
The company had to consider which material would be best for its case to abandon. Spigen says that the hinges of the Tough Armor case are made by “special structural structures for bending purposes.” Spigen says it is still developing and testing its case, but it aims to launch them in mid-April, around Galaxy Times Fold goes on sale.
