Film Name: 中国警察 / Three Old Boys
When the TV version of 《Three Old Boys》 was released three years ago, it was thought to be a great piece of work, and in sync I heard it was going to be made into a film. I didn’t expect Gao Qunshu to use such a luxurious cast as ‘Huang Jiazhong + Jiang Wu + Guo Tao + Jin Shijie + Xing Jiadong’ to make what is probably ‘the worst film in the history of Chinese films released in the past five years’.
Its rotten stench, rotten novelty, rotten ridiculous, rotten jaw-dropping, make you suspect that you are a psychopath to go into the cinema to pay for such a ticket.
It’s not just the message that this film is overloaded with, it’s also the extra characters. As a writer and director, it’s basic to streamline and merge characters, right? The villain and the villain have several useless extra roles, direct deletion of all, such as the yellow-haired gangster and his girlfriend, the role of Baobel, Han Geng played the role of that character, the villain of the old man’s female secretary, and so on, can be merged or deleted.
There are too many characters in the film, and every actor wants to show their face, which leads to sparse pacing. There are too many useless plots, probably also trying to keep some of the plot and setting of the book or show as much as possible, but in the film it makes sense that some of it should be cut because of the length.
The whole film is like cutting together the opening credits of each episode of a 50-episode TV series and showing you the first 30 minutes with over 30 ‘main characters’ and over 10 story lines, then everyone appears for a minute and then disappears.
If it’s a film Trident, about 《Three Old Boys》, it should spend an hour or two portraying three old cops and two or three villains, not both, and then end up with nothing.

The ending is very clean and abrupt without warning. One line appears and then everything is nothing. It’s rushed like child’s play and very poorly done in terms of artistry alone. It ended so unexpectedly and disappointingly that, considering the plot and the various bugs, it seems like nothing was lost, except for an hour or so on pins and needles and the cost of the film ticket.
